🌸 English Meaning

Rock gently, rock gently, O Ranga,
Swing, O Lord—blue-hued child Krishna, swing.

Adorned with tiger-claw leaves and mango garlands,
With anklets ringing “ghaliru ghaliru,”
You dance and sway in joy—swing, O Lord.

Too restless to stay still, you were tied to the mortar,
Yet you are the precious jewel loved by all children—
Swing, O Lord.

You drew out the life of the demoness Putana,
You humbled the pride of the powerful—
Swing, O Lord.

At a word, you struck down Shishupala,
Beloved of sacred Tulasi, ever playful—
Swing, O Lord.

You upheld righteousness, truth and dharma,
You became Arjuna’s charioteer—
Swing, O Lord.

You protected Draupadi in her shame,
Beloved of the Pandavas, strong as a diamond cage—
Swing, O Lord.

With your nails you tore Hiranyakashipu,
You gave peace and protected Prahlada—
Swing, O Lord.

You enchanted the Gopis,
O Purandaravithala, Lord of Sukhatirtha—
Swing, O Lord.

🪔 Reflection

This kolata bhajan carries the sweetness of cradle-song devotion and the depth of cosmic remembrance. Purandaradasa invites us to see Krishna not as a distant god, but as a living presence—rocked in the arms of love, yet holding the universe together. The repeated “tolu” is not mere rhythm; it is a gesture of surrender. Each swing recalls a divine act: protection of the helpless, correction of arrogance, and unwavering commitment to dharma. Child Krishna breaks butter, dances with anklets, yet becomes the charioteer of destiny and the shield of Draupadi. The song gently teaches that playfulness and responsibility are not opposites in the divine; they are one seamless movement.

In Haridasa tradition, bhakti is lived daily—sung, danced, remembered. Purandaradasa’s genius lies in making the highest truths accessible through lullaby tenderness. When life feels heavy, can we remember to “rock” the divine within our own hearts? When faced with injustice, do we trust that grace moves even through small acts of love? The bhajan leaves us with a quiet assurance: the same Lord who sways in joy also stands firm for truth, and holding that rhythm steady within us is itself a form of worship.

🌸 English Meaning:

The boatman said to Lord Rama:
“O Lord, I will not take any fare,
I will not take any fare from you.” ||1||

“I serve rivers and streams here,
You are the Lord who helps cross the ocean of existence.
I ferry people across this side,
Please ferry me across the other side.” ||2||

“You uplifted Ahilya from her curse,
Please lift me too, O Lord.
I ferry here in this world,
You ferry souls across the eternal world.” ||3||

The boatman repeated with devotion:
“I will not take any fare, O Lord,
I only seek your grace.” ||4||

🪔 Reflection:

This bhajan beautifully captures the spirit of selfless devotion through the voice of the humble boatman, Kevat. He sees Lord Rama not just as a royal passenger, but as the eternal guide who delivers souls from the cycle of birth and death.

Kevat’s words are filled with faith and surrender. Though a simple man who rows a boat, he understands the highest truth—while he can help others cross the river, only Lord Rama can help one cross bhavsagar, the ocean of life. His request is clear: “You help me there, as I help You here.” There is no demand, only a heartfelt offering.

His refusal to take fare is symbolic—true service done in devotion seeks no reward. Kevat reminds us that real devotion lies in humility, in recognizing the Lord’s greatness, and in wishing to serve without ego. This bhajan is a gentle yet profound teaching in bhakti, seva, and surrender.

गीतकार – श्री राम जाधव

English Lyrics

Bhakti vaachuni muktichi maj jadli re vyaadhi,
Vitthal meecha khara apraadhi.

Dnyaneshaache amrut anubhav,
Anukampeche netri aasav,
Swapna taral te nakal shaishav,

Sarale shishnaav swachhandipan,
Nuraley yauvan uraley mee pan,
Pari na rangle prampt he man,
Tuzhya chintani kadhi Vitthala.

Lyricist - Shree Ram Jadhav

English Meaning

Without devotion, the disease of liberation has afflicted me, Vithal, I am the true culprit.

Experience the nectar of Dnyaneshwar's wisdom, Tears of compassion fill my eyes, In the fleeting dreams of childhood, When did I lose you, Vithal?

The pure water of the Indrayani River, And the divine hymns of Saint Tukaram, I myself have tainted with my youthful arrogance, Oh Vithal, this treasure of compassion.

The carefree days of childhood have ended, Youth is gone, only my pride remains, Yet, this restless mind never found joy, In contemplating you, Vithal.

Reflections:

This heartfelt abhang captures the deep anguish of a soul that strayed from the path of devotion. The poet confesses—mukti without bhakti has become a burden, not a blessing. Even amidst the wisdom of Jnaneshwar and the purity of Sant Tukaram’s words, the mind wandered, drawn to worldly pleasures. There’s no blaming fate or others—the poet bravely accepts, “I alone am the offender.” As youth fades and freedom ends, what's left is an empty shell still untouched by divine remembrance. Yet beneath the guilt lies a deep yearning—for grace, for connection, for Vitthala’s loving glance. This is not just regret, but a cry for transformation. It reminds us that no matter how far we drift, the doorway back to God remains open, waiting for just one honest step of surrender.

🪔 Reflection

Kanakadasa, the 16th-century saint-poet, often sang of the human ego dissolving before the vastness of the Divine. In this song, he gently reminds us that everything we call “mine”—the body, senses, pleasures, worries, even our impulses—are but instruments in the hands of the Lord. His message is not pessimistic; it is liberating. When one sees the world as divine play, burdens lighten and gratitude grows. The saint subtly asks: If every sense and every desire functions through the Lord’s power, why cling to the illusion of control? And another question lingers: What happens to our sorrow when we recognise that even it belongs to Him?

Kanakadasa’s life—spent in devotion despite social barriers—makes this teaching powerful. His surrender was not weakness but inner strength. To meditate on this song is to gently loosen the grip of possessiveness and invite the humility that leads to peace. One step at a time, it turns daily living into a quiet offering to the Lord.
