Lyrics: Sri Purandaradasa
🌸 English Meaning
Rock gently, rock gently, O Ranga,
Swing, O Lord—blue-hued child Krishna, swing.
Adorned with tiger-claw leaves and mango garlands,
With anklets ringing “ghaliru ghaliru,”
You dance and sway in joy—swing, O Lord.
Too restless to stay still, you were tied to the mortar,
Yet you are the precious jewel loved by all children—
Swing, O Lord.
You drew out the life of the demoness Putana,
You humbled the pride of the powerful—
Swing, O Lord.
At a word, you struck down Shishupala,
Beloved of sacred Tulasi, ever playful—
Swing, O Lord.
You upheld righteousness, truth and dharma,
You became Arjuna’s charioteer—
Swing, O Lord.
You protected Draupadi in her shame,
Beloved of the Pandavas, strong as a diamond cage—
Swing, O Lord.
With your nails you tore Hiranyakashipu,
You gave peace and protected Prahlada—
Swing, O Lord.
You enchanted the Gopis,
O Purandaravithala, Lord of Sukhatirtha—
Swing, O Lord.
🪔 Reflection
This kolata bhajan carries the sweetness of cradle-song devotion and the depth of cosmic remembrance. Purandaradasa invites us to see Krishna not as a distant god, but as a living presence—rocked in the arms of love, yet holding the universe together. The repeated “tolu” is not mere rhythm; it is a gesture of surrender. Each swing recalls a divine act: protection of the helpless, correction of arrogance, and unwavering commitment to dharma. Child Krishna breaks butter, dances with anklets, yet becomes the charioteer of destiny and the shield of Draupadi. The song gently teaches that playfulness and responsibility are not opposites in the divine; they are one seamless movement.
In Haridasa tradition, bhakti is lived daily—sung, danced, remembered. Purandaradasa’s genius lies in making the highest truths accessible through lullaby tenderness. When life feels heavy, can we remember to “rock” the divine within our own hearts? When faced with injustice, do we trust that grace moves even through small acts of love? The bhajan leaves us with a quiet assurance: the same Lord who sways in joy also stands firm for truth, and holding that rhythm steady within us is itself a form of worship.
