English Meaning

The happiness found on the banks of the Chandrabhaga River,

Standing behind Pundalik.

Gracefully, beautifully, standing with balanced feet,

On the brick out of love for His devotees.

Both hands on His waist, with a beautiful face,

Holding the conch and discus, along with the mace and lotus.

Chokha (the devotee) says, "He shines with the Vaijayanti necklace,

With sandalwood paste smeared all over His body"

English Meaning

All Planetary Strengths are You, Lotus-eyed One

You are the protector of all, the all-pervasive one.

You are the Sun, Moon, and Mercury; you are Rahu and Ketu. You are Venus, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. You are day and night, you are the creator of new ordinances. You are the cure for worldly ailments, you are the healer.

You are the fortnight, you are the seasonal time. You are the star conjunctions, the lunar days, and the astrological elements. You are the one who preserved Draupadi's honor eternally. You, the one with the bird vehicle, are the protector of the downtrodden.

You are the seasons and the years, you are the vows and the new year. You are the rituals, sacrifices, and the path to salvation. You are the unconquerable, my lord Purandara Vitthala, You are the great one who is beyond praises.

Vittala Panduranga Vittala Pandurangaa

Vittalaaa Pandurangaa

English Meaning

Rangammaa, my dear Rangammaa,

O Hari, O Krishna, beloved Rangammaa.

Like a radiant maiden, she dances gracefully,
Draped in yellow silk and divine ornaments,
Bowing at the Lord’s lotus feet with devotion.

She stands devoted before Lord Vitthala,
On the sacred banks of the river Chandrabhaga,
Offering her prayers with a pure and humble heart.

All chant in love and surrender —
Vittala Panduranga, the eternal Lord of Pandharpur.

Reflections

This beautiful Marathi devotional song “Rangammaa Maajhi Rangammaa” captures the spirit of pure surrender and loving devotion that defines the Varkari tradition. Rangammaa is not just a devotee; she is an embodiment of unwavering faith. Her every gesture — the dance, the folded hands, the humble bow at the Lord’s feet — becomes a form of worship. The song paints her as both a symbol of joyous devotion and a reminder that the path to the Divine is not through austerity alone, but through love expressed with the whole heart.

The imagery of Chandrabhaga river and Pandharpur evokes the pilgrimage every Varkari undertakes, where devotion becomes a living current flowing through body and soul. Rangammaa’s prayer at the riverbank reflects humanity’s eternal longing to meet the Divine — a longing that dissolves the ego and awakens bliss. As the refrain “Vittala Panduranga” rises, it unites all hearts in the same rhythm of surrender, transforming the song into a collective offering of love and gratitude to the ever-smiling Lord of Pandharpur.

English Meaning

Come, let's go to Pandhari, to see the beloved of our soul.

Let's bathe in the Bhima river, and apply the dust of saints' feet on our heads. (Chorus)

With the garland of Tulsi beads as our guide, and sandalwood paste on our foreheads,

Let us meditate deeply and sing Hari with true devotion. (Verse 1)

Vitthal is present everywhere, Pandhari is the marketplace of the world.

There is no other Vaikuntha, let us always remain here steadfastly. (Verse 2)

We neither die nor are born, distinctions are of no concern to us.

Says Tukaram, let us bow our heads at the lotus feet of Ghanshyam. (Verse 3)

Reflection:

This abhang is a heartfelt invitation to walk together—to Pandharpur, and deeper still, to the heart where Vitthal lives. Tukaram Maharaj speaks not of a distant God, but of a beloved soul-friend—jivlaga—who waits to be seen with love, not just with eyes.

Bathing in Bhima, touching the feet of saints, wearing tulsi beads—these are not mere rituals, but signs of surrender, of wanting nothing but God. The mind becomes quiet, the name of Hari begins to flow, and slowly, everything else fades.

For Tukaram, Pandharpur is not a place—it’s where the Lord is near, where love is simple, and where the soul feels at home. In that space, there’s no birth, no death, no differences—only devotion, only Vitthal.
