Meaning (in English)
I surrender to the son of Hari and Hara, who sits in yogic posture, who enchants the universe, whose feet are worshipped, who destroys ignorance, and dances eternally.
One who delights in devotional chants, resides in the hearts of devotees, appears radiant like the sun, and is the master of all the divine beings.He is the essence of love and truth, giver of life, fulfiller of wishes, radiantly auspicious, a temple of the sacred Om, and lover of devotional singing.
The one who rides a horse, has a beautiful face, holds a divine mace, described in the Vedas, and showers the grace of the Guru.
Worshipped by all three worlds, divine in nature, radiant with three eyes, spiritual guide of the gods, and fulfiller of all who seek.
Remover of fear and suffering, full of emotional warmth, enchanting the world, adorned with sacred ash, riding a divine white elephant.
One with a gentle smile and beautiful face, body soft like a baby elephant, moving like a lion with the strength of an elephant.
Beloved to his devotees, granter of their desires, ornament of the Vedas, life of saints, and enchanted by devotional singing.
Reflection
The Hariharatmaja Ashtakam is a divine composition that glorifies Lord Ayyappa, the son of Lord Vishnu (Hari) and Lord Shiva (Hara). Through each stanza, the devotee celebrates his form, his qualities, and his leelas. The repetition of "Hariharatmajam Devam Ashraye" becomes a spiritual mantra for inner surrender, purity, and devotion. Chanting or listening to this ashtakam during daily worship or during the Mandala period deepens bhakti and centers the mind on divinity.
