Iti Shree Adi Shankaracharyavirachita Annapoornaa Stotram ||
🌸 English Meaning:
“O Mother Annapoorna, the giver of joy, remover of fear, and ocean of beauty, You sanctify the world and appear as Maheshwari before us. Descendant of the Himalayas, presiding deity of Kashi, grant me alms — the alms of grace, compassion, and nourishment.”
Each verse describes a different facet of Goddess Annapoorna — as the bestower of prosperity, destroyer of enemies, giver of dharma, and the doorway to liberation. She is praised as the Mother of the universe, ornamented with jewels, radiating the fragrance of divine virtues, holding the rosary, book, noose, and goad. Ultimately, she is the embodiment of Parvati, the eternal consort of Lord Shiva, feeding the world not only with food but with knowledge and spiritual sustenance.
🪔 Reflection:
The Annapoorna Stotram, composed by Adi Shankaracharya, is a heartfelt invocation to Goddess Annapoorna, the presiding deity of Kashi (Varanasi). Legend says that once Shiva declared the world to be an illusion (maya), and Parvati, to teach him the value of sustenance, withdrew food from creation. The universe trembled, and even Shiva felt hunger. Then Parvati appeared as Annapoorna Devi, the inexhaustible giver of food, reminding that even spiritual pursuits need nourishment. Shankaracharya captured this eternal truth: material and spiritual life are not opposed but complementary. Food is sacred, and feeding others is feeding the Divine. This hymn does not merely ask for grain but for the higher alms of jnana (knowledge) and vairagya (detachment). In today’s world of abundance yet hunger, the stotram reminds us that true prosperity is when no one goes hungry and when wisdom is shared freely. Annapoorna is not just Goddess of food—She is the embodiment of compassion, completeness, and the mother who sustains all beings. 🙏

English Meaning: Sing
praises of the Goddess Durga Bhavani— the
mother of the universe, the slayer of the demon Mahishasura. She
embodies the three qualities of nature, bearing many divine forms, the
giver of wisdom—salutations to You! ||1|| Remover
of evil, charming to behold, She
performs miracles beyond human understanding. ||2|| Daughter
of the Himalayas, destroyer of worldly fear, She
grants fearlessness to the wise who take refuge in Her. ||3|| 🪔
Reflection: This
soulful bhajan celebrates Goddess Durga during Navaratri in Her form as
Bhavani, the fierce yet compassionate mother. Each line is rich in
symbolism—the universal mother (Jagata Janani) is not just a nurturer but also
the destroyer of adharma, represented by Mahishasura. She operates through the
three gunas (sattva, rajas, tamas), yet transcends them in her many radiant
forms. The
second stanza brings out her mystical powers: She is both awe-inspiring and
beautiful, capable of transforming the impossible into reality. The third verse
highlights Her identity as the daughter of the Himalayas, pointing to purity,
strength, and elevated wisdom. Her promise of abhaya—fearlessness—to the
surrendered soul is the core of the bhakti path. In
just a few verses, the bhajan invokes protection, wisdom, and surrender. It’s
both a call for divine grace and an acknowledgment of the goddess as the cosmic
force upholding dharma. Youtube
