Marulu maadikoideyalla |

 📜 Original Kannada Lyrics:

Lyrics : Sri Purandara Dasaru

🌸 English Meaning:

O Goddess Māyā, you have captivated me completely.

Day and night, unceasingly, you never leave me.

Even the wise, abandoning daily pleasures,
Engaging in many austerities, could not escape your snare.

Even renunciates who give up all worldly ties
Still carry you close in their hearts without letting go.

At the time of cosmic dissolution, when lying upon the banyan leaf,
All jewels and treasures dissolve into the waters wisely.

Lord Ranga, dwelling upon the earth and the serpent mountain,
Accepts you as his consort without hesitation.

Even when children are born, your purity shines forth,
Though mothers and children alike fall into worldly attachments.

On the left stands the Earth, on the right stands Shri,
And before him stands Durga Devi,
While upon his lap you rest as Lakshmi, receiving his tender affection.

Forever may you not be forgotten, O source of bliss—
Bestow joy upon all people through the grace
Of Purandara Vittalaraya. ||

🪔 Reflection:

Purandara Dasa, revered as the Sangeeta Pitamaha (Father of Carnatic Music), composed thousands of devotional songs blending philosophy with everyday life. In this kriti, he reveals the power of Māyā—an eternal force that captivates even the wisest and most ascetic souls. He poetically shows how no one escapes the play of illusion: scholars, renunciates, or householders—all are bound in some form. Yet, in the cosmic drama, Māyā herself becomes inseparable from the divine, symbolized by Lord Ranga accepting her in varied forms—Durga, Lakshmi, or Bhumi Devi.

The beauty of this bhajan lies in its honesty: acknowledging that worldly entanglements cannot be easily discarded. Rather, by seeing Māyā as divine, the very bonds of life become a means of devotion. The song reminds us that instead of struggling against illusion, we may embrace it as part of God’s creation, using it to deepen surrender. For devotees, it is a gentle call to see every role—mother, child, ascetic, or seeker—as sacred. This song holds significance as it bridges worldly experience and divine truth, showing that even Māyā, when surrendered, leads us back to Vitthala.
