English Meaning
Chant the sacred name of Rama again and again!
Let go of lust and anger, again and again, O noble one!
Clasp the feet of your Guru tightly,
Adorn your head with the sanctified offerings of Hari.
Again and again, call upon Him—
Let the knots of worldly bondage be cut loose,
Strike down every misfortune and pain!
Seek the company of the virtuous, again and again,
Break ties with the wicked, without hesitation.
Behold Him who steered Arjuna’s chariot—
Fix your mind in Hari's devotion, firmly and fully!
Follow the one who grants boons to the mighty elephant kings,
Strive hard to free yourself from worldly toil.
Let not our protector Bhīmeśa remain distant—
Go and unite with Purandara Viṭṭhala, our eternal refuge!
Abstract
This bhajan by Purandara Dasaru resonates like an urgent, compassionate whisper from the divine: "Speak the name of Rama; leave behind anger and desire." In its lyrical rhythm, it gently peels away our worldly entanglements, urging us to grasp the Guru’s feet, to wear God’s blessings like a crown, and to strike down the illusions and miseries that bind us. The poet implores us to choose holy company over destructive influence, to observe the Lord who guided Arjuna, and to anchor our restless minds in the joy of Haribhajana.
Each stanza is a step toward freedom, painting devotion not as a passive retreat but an active, transformative pursuit. The final verse swells with yearning and surrender—asking us to approach the compassionate Viṭṭhala who removes burdens and grants strength like Bhīma. In a world filled with noise and distraction, this bhajan becomes a spiritual roadmap: reminding us that peace is not found by escaping life, but by aligning every breath with the divine.
