🎼 Lyrics : Purandaradasa
🌸 English Meaning:
On the seventh day of birth,
The wicked demoness Pootani was slain. ||Hutti||
Though she gave poisoned milk,
Your divine glance protected You, O Ranga. ||2||
As a child among cowherds,
You churned the waters of the Yamuna.
When Your feet slipped in play, O Ranga,
Why do You cry, child of joy? ||Aluvudyaatako||
Born as the son of Vasudeva,
You destroyed the cruel demons. ||Vasudeva||
You struck down the mighty wrestlers,
O Ranga, fearless protector. ||2||
O beautiful Lord of Velapura,
Protector of devotees in many ways, ||Sharanu||
O Purandara Vitthala, the giver of boons,
Why do You cry, O Ranga,
When the world rejoices in You? ||Aluvudyaatako||
🪔 Reflection:
This bhajan by the great Haridasa saint Purandaradasa beautifully narrates episodes from Krishna’s early life—slaying of Pootana, playful childhood with cowherds, the Yamuna pastimes, and His victories over demons and wrestlers. Purandaradasa, known as the “Sangeeta Pitamaha” (grandfather of Carnatic music), not only composed thousands of devotional songs but also used music as a way to spread bhakti among common people. His compositions are simple yet profound, accessible to both scholars and villagers.
The refrain “Aluvudyaatako Ranga” (Why do You cry, O Ranga?) adds a tender, human touch, showing how devotees see the Divine not only as a mighty protector but also as a playful child who shares their emotions. The significance of this bhajan lies in its blend of leela (divine play) and anugraha (grace)—reminding us that the Lord is both the fearless vanquisher of evil and the innocent child of Vrindavan. For the devotee, these stories are not distant myths but living truths that inspire trust, affection, and surrender. In moments of struggle, this song gently whispers that even the all-powerful Lord sheds tears of play, and in that vulnerability, we find intimacy with the Divine.
