Guru bina kaun batave /

English Lyrics

Guru bin kaun batave baat
Bada vikrit yam ghat

Bhranti ki pahadi, nadiya beech mein
Ahankar ki lat
Bada vikrit yam ghat

Kaam krodh do parvat thaade
Lobh chor sanghaat
Bada vikrit yam ghat

Mad makshar ka medha barsat
Maya pawan bah jaaye
Bada vikrit yam ghat

Kahat Kabir suno bhai sadho
Kyon tarna yah ghat
Bada vikrit yam ghat

English Meaning

Without the Guru, who can show the way?
The journey to the realm of Yama (death) is perilous.

The mountain of confusion, with the river in between,
The path is filled with the walls of ego.
The journey to the realm of Yama is perilous.

Lust and anger are two mountains standing tall,
Greed is the thief that attacks.
The journey to the realm of Yama is perilous.

The intoxication of pride and ignorance showers down,
The winds of illusion blow it away.
The journey to the realm of Yama is perilous.

Says Kabir, listen, O wise ones,
Why try to cross this dangerous path?
The journey to the realm of Yama is perilous.

This poem by Kabir emphasizes the difficulties of life and the challenges one faces without the guidance of a true Guru. It illustrates the obstacles such as ego, anger, greed, and ignorance that hinder spiritual progress.

English Meaning

Guru Maharaj, Guru, Victory, Victory, Supreme Brahman, Satguru.

Bestower of the four liberations, the generous wish-fulfilling tree.
Whose form transcends the mind, intellect, and speech.
Invisible, nameless, formless, non-dual, eternal, and supreme.
The indwelling Lord, Ramdas, the protector, full of compassion.
Guru Maharaj, Guru, Victory, Victory, Supreme Brahman, Satguru

Reflection

This bhajan is a heartfelt praise to the Guru—not just as a teacher, but as the formless, infinite Parabrahma, the source of all liberation and compassion. The Guru is described as beyond the reach of mind, words, and intellect, yet ever-present as grace and wisdom. Like a wish-fulfilling tree, the Guru gives without asking, guiding seekers across the ocean of ignorance. Names like Ramdas, Gopal, and Karunakar show the Guru’s loving, playful, and merciful nature. In calling out “Guru Maharaj, Jai Jai,” the devotee is not merely chanting a name, but surrendering to that inner light which is eternal, silent, and freeing.
